Things I’ve Learnt in the First 100 Days of Parenting
That if you snooze, you win.
That a dog is just a worse horse.
That tomorrow is another chance
to get it wrong again.
That this feels as good
a place to start as any.
That putting ice in front of a fan
is not the same as air conditioning.
That it is easier to reach room temperature
while you are still in an actual room.
That if it’s going to spill over,
then it’s going to spill over.
That at least if you are screaming,
you’re alive.
That it doesn’t have to make sense
to make you feel something.
That most people want to show kindness
and you are the perfect excuse.
That I no longer have the time
to be shelling my own nuts.
That I will keep hoping,
because what is the alternative?
That there are details in each picture
I have not yet seen.
That normal was never the goal
for what life holds for you.
That crying doesn’t feel like
an unreasonable response.
That days can always
come into their own.
That sometimes we just
need to be held.
That obviously this is not
a normal thing to do.
That if we make it through this,
we can make it through anything.
That we could be covered in dinosaurs.
That we are, in fact, adorable.
That deep down, we are all just little rats.
That the bravest thing
that you can be is open.
That I will keep practising this
for your whole life.
That you are here and you are everything.
That you are doing so well, baby.
That this world holds so much wonder.
That I will savour every second.
That we can take tomorrow’s today as it comes.
That there is still so much living to be done.
